Lumbar puncture: Lumbar puncture is a diagnostic test used to evaluate the spinal fluid for signs of increased pressure, inflammation or infection within the central nervous system. This outpatient procedure involves removing a small amount of spinal fluid for laboratory testing using a small needle inserted between two vertebrae in your lower back. Though lumbar punctures are generally regarded as a very safe procedure, they do carry some risks of post lumbar puncture headache, brief back or leg discomfort or bleeding near the puncture site. Please make sure you inform your doctor of any use of blood thinners as they often need to be discontinued temporarily prior to this procedure.

Due to the sensitive nature of radiology and pathology test results, these are not available on the patient portal and must be obtained through the hospital’s Health Information Department.
