What happens if you are admitted to the hospital before surgery?

If you are admitted to the hospital before your day of surgery, you will be assigned a room where you will spend the night. You will meet with a clinician that will discuss your surgery and also be visited by your surgical team, anesthesiologist and Cardiac Education Coordinator. The aim is to obtain the clearest possible picture of your medical needs while offering you a chance to get information about your treatment from a wide range of sources.

Why is it important to designate a family member as a surgeon?

A: It is beneficial to designate one family member or friend to maintain communication with your surgeon and the healthcare team. This will enhance the flow of information and decrease the chance for miscommunication.

How long does it take to get a heart surgery?

A: The operation itself usually takes 3 to 5 hours, but preparation for surgery, administration of anesthesia, and preparation for the transfer to the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Units (CTICUs) extends the time in the operating rooms to 4 to 6 hours.

What items are not taken by family after surgery?

You will be given a hospital gown to wear and asked to remove all clothing, makeup, jewelry, hair pieces and hair pins, dentures, hearing aids, eyeglasses and contact lenses. Any items not taken by your family will be inventoried and kept by security and returned to you after surgery.

What is an ETT tube?

A member of the operating room team will shave surgical sites to remove any hair. An endotrachael tube (ETT) is inserted into the windpipe through your mouth while you are asleep. This tube is attached to the ventilator that breathes for you during and after surgery.

Where does Connect Health come from?

The health information in your Connect account comes directly from your doctor's electronic medical record. For outpatient records, you can ask your doctor to correct any inaccurate information at your next visit, or send a message through Connect to your provider’s office to request corrections to your health record.

How long is a self sign up good for?

If you get an activation message via text message or email, you have 24 hours to respond to it. If you get a letter with a code on it, it is good for 30 days. Also, you can complete the Self Sign Up process without an activation code, and the system will ask you questions to verify your identity.

How old do you have to be to have a Connect account?

Any patient age 12 or over is eligible for a Connect account. In addition, parents can be given portal proxy access to manage their children's accounts, or patients can grant access to their own accounts to family members, friends, or caregivers.
