What is pediatrics in UCLA?

Pediatrics is a multi-specialty service providing family-centered quality care to the infant, toddler, child and adolescent patient requiring acute medical and surgical care. The patients require comprehensive, specialized, age-specific care that necessitates close observation, frequent nursing assessment and ancillary service involvement. The ages of our patients range from newborn to 21 years, with the exception of the Pediatric Oncology patients under the UCLA Teen & Young Adult (TYA) program, which covers ages 13-25 years old. The patients have a variety of chronic and acute medical and surgical diagnoses. Patients in Pediatrics may require 1:2, 1:3, or 1:4 nurse to patient ratio. Patients may require skilled nursing interventions that include: central line care, tracheostomy care, chest tube management, transfusion of blood products and chemotherapy, wound and drain care, ostomy care, gastrostomy care, parenteral and enteral feeding.
