School of Dentistry to have a major impact upon future care of oral health nationwide

UAB researchers are contributing to “Oral Health in America: Advances and Challenges,” a national publication aimed at exploring the nation’s oral health over two decades.

Hours of Operation

Appointments are scheduled to begin at 8:00 am and 4:00 pm Monday-Friday in our clinics (excluding closure dates). Most clinics close from 12:00 to 1:00 pm for lunch and at 5:00 pm each evening.

First Appointment

A patient’s initial appointment will be scheduled in our Treatment Planning Clinic. During this appointment, a student (supervised by our faculty) will evaluate all aspects of your dental and oral health to offer you various treatment options. Please allow 3-4 hours for this appointment.

Subsequent Appointments

After you complete your treatment planning appointment, you will be assigned to a student who will provide care within one of our general dentistry group practices in our Comprehensive Care Clinic. The faculty within that group practice will oversee your treatment plan and care.

Emergency Care & Appointments

In pain? Emergency patients can visit our Urgent (limited/emergency) Care Clinic, which is a walk-in clinic that does not make appointments. If you have an urgent dental need and/or want one specific concern addressed, you may be a better fit for our Urgent (limited/emergency) Care Clinic.

Billing & Insurance

Although we do not provide free care, our clinics are a great fit for people who want to improve their overall oral health, especially self-pay patients and patients who want to make their insurance dollars go further. Our fees are approximately 50% lower fees than private practice.

Parking

Visit our Directions & Parking page for parking locations, hours, cost and details.

Cost of Treatment

Because each patient’s dental needs are unique, we are unable to provide an accurate cost estimate for treatment until a patient is evaluated through an initial exam by one of our faculty, residents or dental students. During the initial exam, our providers will discuss treatment recommendations and outline approximate costs in a treatment plan.

External Rotations

All third and fourth year dental students rotate through a variety of external sites as part of their clinical assignments.

Voluntary SEARCH Rotations

Through our SEARCH Program (Student/Resident Experiences and Rotations in Community Health), fourth year dental students who are finishing their requirements can volunteer for service at a number of regional external, community-based rotation sites.

Improving Oral Health Outcomes

In addition to community rotations, volunteer outreach, and hosting the National Dental Practice Based Research Network (NDPBRN), UAB School of Dentistry advances oral health through a number of local, community-based, and global initiatives.

Community-Based Grants, Contracts, and Partnerships

UAB School of Dentistry has a number of community-based grants, contracts, and partnerships that enhance our state and local outreach. Examples of these outreach activities include:

Global Outreach Through International Ties

Our faculty serve on the UAB International Education Committee and the Global and Community Health Outreach project in collaboration with the UAB School of Public Health. In addition, UAB School of Dentistry has affiliation agreements with six dental schools in other countries to provide collaboration in education.

Community Partnerships

Our employees, residents and students are encouraged to support, promote, and sustain the efforts of partnering organizations throughout the community.

Student-Led Outreach

Our Impressions and Dental Immersion Day programs, sponsored by the UAB chapters of Student National Dental Association (SNDA) and the Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA), are designed to connect pre-health college-level and high stchool students with a career in dentistry.
