Surgical Treatment Options. Many foot and ankle conditions can be treated effectively with physical therapy or with shoe inserts and orthotics. However, if surgery is recommended, options may include: Ankle arthroscopy – Your surgeon uses a small camera to view the inside of the ankle (not foot) and assess the bones and cartilage.
This procedure can effectively reduce pain caused by arthritis, but does limit range of motion of the foot or ankle. Ankle joint replacement – During ankle replacement, your surgeon removes damaged ends of bones and cartilage and replaces it with an artificial joint. Ankle joint replacement reduces pain caused by arthritis.
The foot and ankle support and move your body with an intricate network of bones, tendons, muscles, ligaments and joints. When an injury or other condition weakens even the tiniest of those working parts, it can throw your body — and life — off-balance.
Many foot and ankle problems improve with nonsurgical treatment. Strengthening muscles with physical therapy or reducing inflammation with medication injections can help get and keep you moving again.
