Symptoms

Once an artery is narrowed, or even blocked, there is a reduced flow of blood to that part of the body and its organs. Muscles and cells behind the blockage are no longer supplied with sufficient oxygen. The physicians call this state of deficiency of blood as "ischemia". The most common symptoms of peripheral occlusive disease in the legs are:

Detecting PAD

In a baseline exam, the attending physician uses the Doppler pressure measurement to determine the ABI index (also known as the ankle-brachial index). The blood pressure in the arms and legs is measured and the ratio of these two values is determined. For a person who does not suffer from PAD, the ratio is around 0.9 to 1.0.

Treatment options

There are several options for the treatment of arterial diseases. The focus is on reopening the occluded vessel and re-establishing blood flow. The proven forms of therapy include:

Life after treatment

Peripheral Arterial Disease can be treated with modern technology devices and techniques with the aim that the patient's quality of life is restored. Important in this context is the prevention of re-occlusions. An important action by the patient themselves is the change and maintenance to a more healthy lifestyle.
