How to make an appointment at the Student Health Center?

To schedule an appointment with the Student Health Center, students may self-schedule online through their patient portal, call us at 936-294-1805, or they may walk-in and schedule an appointment with our front desk staff.

How long does it take to cancel a MySam appointment?

Allow at least one hour of time for your appointment from check-in until completion. Failure to cancel your appointment at least 1 hour before your scheduled appointment time OR simply not showing up for your appointment will cause you to incur a $25 no-show fee on your MySam account.

About the Texas State Law for Bacterial Meningitis

Effective January 1, 2014 Texas state law ( Senate Bill 62) requires that on the first day of class at an institution of higher education in Texas, Sam Houston State University, students must provide proof of immunization OR an accepted waiver for bacterial meningitis.

What is the SHSU Student Health Center?

The SHSU Student Health Center is a primary care outpatient clinic. Located on campus, it provides health services to enrolled students. These health services include preventative care services, a women’s health clinic, laboratory testing, and pharmacy services that are all affordable and easily accessible. At the Student Health Center, students will be cared for by a compassionate medical team, which includes doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and licensed vocational nurses. The SHC strives to provide the highest quality of health services to patients. Students are encouraged to visit the Student Health Center for routine illnesses and minor injuries.

Can a student release personal health information?

In compliance with state and federal laws, the Student Health Center cannot release any personal health information without a student’s written consent.

What is the first visit at Campus Smiles?

Your first visit will consist of a comprehensive exam, cleaning, and x-rays. The out-of-pocket costs for an appointment decrease if you have PPO dental insurance or the Campus Smiles partnered low-cost insurance plan.

Where is the dental office at SHSU?

The Dental Office on campus, located in the Student Health Center, is a full-service practice that opened in August of 2014. Since then, the office has provided dental care to hundreds of people in the SHSU community. Their dentist and staff make up an experienced team of licensed professionals who aim to provide SHSU students, faculty, and staff with the most convenient access to high-quality, affordable dental care.

Does SHSU have a pharmacy?

The Student Health Center has an in-house Pharmacy available to current SHSU students. Our facility is able to fill any valid prescription written by most licensed providers and will work with patients to find the most affordable medications to fit their needs. Additionally, the Pharmacy provides over-the-counter (OTC) products for everyday needs without a prescription. For additional information, contact the Pharmacy directly at (936)294-1803.

Can you ask for a chaperone during an exam?

You can expect full consideration of your privacy and confidentiality in care discussions, exams, and treatments. You may ask for a chaperone during any type of exam.

What is Campus Connect?

Campus Connect is designed to help students access their campus resources and optimize their student experience. Campus Connect provides students the opportunity to schedule appointments with many resources on campus, such as academic advising, academic support programs, and other resources, such as the Student Money Management Center.

What is national student exchange?

National Student Exchange (NSE) is a great domestic options to study abroad. NSE provides accessible collegiate study away to undergraduate students at member colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Through this academic program, SHSU students can spend a semester or full year studying away at another member campus, and continue to make progress toward their SHSU degree. After a semester or year on exchange, students return to SHSU to complete their remaining degree requirements and graduate on time.

Does SHSU offer study abroad?

SHSU's Study Abroad Programs offer students the opportunity to engage in an educational and cultural learning experience. Students have the opportunity to study at one of our Exchange universities, on an Affiliated Transfer Credit program, or an SHSU Faculty-Led summer/winter term program.
