Skilled care (or "Swing-Bed" care) can be provided for a limited period of time following an acute stay due to an injury, illness or surgery. It is designed to be a short term and rehabilitative in nature. Services such as physical, occupational or speech therapy are examples of skilled services provided during such a stay.
Medicare, Medicaid and most insurance companies cover inpatient skilled care if specific criteria are met. In order to qualify for skilled swing bed coverage under Medicare and Medicaid, individuals must meet the following qualifications: They must have had a 3-day acute inpatient hospital stay within the past 30 days.
