Can kidney failure be reversed?

This is the more common type of kidney failure. Although it cannot be reversed, it can be treated. We invite you to increase your understanding of what the kidneys do and what happens when they begin to fail, review CKD treatment options and the different types of dialysis. What is peritoneal dialysis?

There are two types of dialysis: peritoneal dialysis (done at home) and hemodialysis (typically done in a hospital or clinic). Automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) is a form of PD done by a machine, usually while you sleep so you can carry on normal activities during the day.

How does dialysis help the body?

When a patient’s kidneys fail, dialysis helps their body: 1 Remove waste, extra water, and salt to prevent a buildup from occurring 2 Maintain and regulate a safe level of specific chemicals in their blood 3 Control their blood pressure levels

How does PD work?

Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) uses the lining of your stomach to gently remove waste from your bloodstream through dialysate. Dialysate gets flushed through a surgically embedded tube, known as a catheter, in your stomach instead of sharp needles. The process takes several hours, but the pliable catheter is small and easily hidden under your clothes as you perform day to day activities.

When is dialysis needed?

Dialysis is needed when a patient develops end stage kidney failure. This usually occurs when the patient loses anywhere from 85 to 90 percent of their normal kidney function and their glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is less than 15. The GFR is calculated by a medical professional and it takes into account a patient’s age, body size, blood creatinine test, and gender. The GFR determines the patient’s stage of kidney disease and informs the doctor about what kind of treatment is necessary.
