PANDAS is an acronym for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections. Current medical theory suspects that streptococcal infections can trigger an autoimmune disease in some patients causing various psychiatric problems. There are no tests to diagnose PANDAS and since a patient can have mental illness ...
Since there is no test to diagnose PANDAS, there are criteria a patient needs to meet before being diagnosed with this disorder. It is suspected in children that present with an abrupt onset of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)/tic disorder following a suspected group A strep (GAS) infection and / or improvement following treatment by antibiotics.
If PANDAS is an auto immune disorder (and this remains controversial), immunomodulatory treatments might be beneficial. We do not offer treatment with these medications and it’s recommended they not receive them outside of the research setting.
There are no tests to diagnose PANDAS and since a patient can have mental illness without a strep infection, this makes it difficult to discern by the doctor from regular psychiatric illness. For this reason, what to do can be very confusing to not just the patient but also the medical provider.
