The Patient Access Network Foundation (PAN) is an independent, national 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to helping federally and commercially insured people living with life-threatening, chronic, and rare diseases with the out-of-pocket costs for their prescribed medications.
The grant qualifies as a prize or award that is excludible from gross income under Internal Revenue Code section 74 (b), if the recipient is selected from the general public. For this purpose, the recipient may keep the prize or award, and need not authorize the foundation to transfer the prize or award to a governmental unit or to another charity.
Patient assistance programs (PAPs), which are usually sponsored by pharmaceutical manufacturers, are promoted as a “safety net” for Americans who have no health insurance or are underinsured. The goal of these programs is to provide financial assistance to help these patients access drugs for little or no cost.
