What is pelvic ultrasound?

A pelvic ultrasound is a noninvasive tool that provides internal imaging of a woman’s reproductive/urinary system. Most people are familiar with its use to monitor the development of a fetus. However, ultrasound is also used to diagnose and monitor a number of other conditions, as well, including cancer, uterine fibroids and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Ultrasound technology uses sound waves that bounce off of internal organs, producing images that are transmitted to a video screen. These images enable the doctor to view internal images of organs, tissues, and muscles.

How long does it take to get an ultrasound?

Depending on the purpose for the ultrasound, the procedure can take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour.

Is pelvic ultrasound safe?

Absolutely. Ultrasound pelvic examinations are safe and are also painless and noninvasive.
