The department is pioneering research in orthodontics and tooth movement. Numerous animal and clinical studies are underway, investigating ways to move teeth faster and safer and strengthen the bones of the jaws.
Topics include: biology of tooth movement, biomechanics, mechanotherapy and a variety of appliances used during and after orthodontic treatment. Students diagnose and treat patients who could benefit from esthetic oriented clear aligner therapy under faculty supervision.
Comprehensive care requires the general dentist to recognize, identify, and manage all aspects of oral and dental diseases and disorders, including orthodontic and dentofacial problems. General dentists must have an understanding of the etiology and management of acquired and developmental occlusal abnormalities and dentofacial deformities for patients of all ages. The general dentist should also be able to counsel patients and consult with specialists to coordinate total oral health care. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking and problem-solving skills and the distinction between limited and comprehensive orthodontic treatment.
Liliana Ortiz Camacho, DDS, received her DDS degree from Universidad del Zulia in Maracaibo, Venezuela. She continued her education in United States, where she completed a 2 years International Program in Prosthodontics and another 3-years post graduate training in Prosthodontics at New York University College of Dentistry. Dr.
Dr. Francis Tung is a graduate of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, class of 1986 where he received his DMD and MPH degrees. After four years in private practice in Boston, Dr. Tung returned to Harvard School of Dental Medicine where he received his prosthodontics certificate in 1992.
Najafi is presently a full-time clinical assistant professor in NYU College of Dentistry, Department of Prosthodontics. He teaches in the Comprehensive and Esthetics programs for int’l dentists. He was honored by NYU College of Dentistry, Dept. of Prosthodontics with an award as the top resident of his class.
