NCV: Nerve conduction velocity

This test measures how quickly the nerves in your arms and legs conduct electrical signals. It’s often used to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome or neuropathy.

EMG: Needle electromyography

Often performed along with nerve conduction studies. Electromyography measures the electrical discharges produced in your muscles by use of a small needle electrode.

EEG: Electroencephalogram

An electroencephalogram is a test that detects electrical activity in your brain. Electrodes are attached to your scalp and is one of the main diagnostic tests in diagnosing and treating epilepsy.

Lumbar puncture

A lumbar puncture (spinal tap) is a minimally invasive test that removes a small amount of spinal fluid to record the opening pressure, look for signs of infection, multiple sclerosis, and cancer.

Repetitive nerve stimulation

In this nerve conduction study, doctors attach electrodes to your skin over the muscles to be tested. Doctors send small pulses of electricity through the electrodes to measure the nerve’s ability to send a signal to your muscle.
