Merchant Accounts: Moneris is a direct processor, meaning it processes all transactions in-house rather than relying on a third party for this service. For merchants, this means you’ll always be dealing with the same company, especially when faced with a held transaction or an account freeze.
As used in the Agreement, “Term” means the Initial Term and any subsequent Renewal Terms. Three years is the industry standard for an initial merchant account contract. However, automatic renewal periods are limited by Canadian law to no more than six months at a time.

A US-based division was sold to Vantiv (now FIS WorldPay) in 2016, and today the company operates only in Canada.
Credit Card Terminals: Moneris offers several countertop and wireless terminals, but it doesn’t disclose very much information about specific models or capabilities. All models now support EMV payments, and most will also accept NFC-based payment methods such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.
The Code of Conduct aims to protect businesses from some of the more unscrupulous practices that are common within the credit card processing industry . Although it isn’t legally binding, Moneris has pledged to abide by the Code and provides a Code of Conduct Complaints Resolution page on its website where merchants can file complaints. Major provisions of the Code include the following:
Moneris also charges a “deactivation fee” (i.e., an early termination fee or ETF) of $300 per location if you close your account early. Again, you can sometimes get this fee waived if you firmly negotiate when setting up your account. Be sure to get a written record of any waiver and keep a copy of it for your records.
Despite being a large direct processor, Moneris is not accredited by the BBB. The company currently has an A+ rating, with seven complaints filed within the last three years. Only four of those complaints were filed within the past twelve months.
We understand your business objectives for payment processing – efficiency, effectiveness, and the delivery of exceptional service to your customers. Our technology solutions are cost-effective and work for your business needs.

Merchants today have to be payment ready because customers expect to pay however and whenever they want. Partnering with these card brands reflects our ongoing commitment to merchants who are better prepared than ever to offer payment options that meet that customer demand.
Moneris’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program supports our mission, vision, values, and strategy. Our CSR program focuses on three main pillars of support: Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Community Support.
Moneris Solutions is a large credit card processor based in Canada with headquarters in Toronto. The company has a U.S. subsidiary, Humboldt Merchant Services; however, the scope of this review will be for the Canadian-based Moneris (see our Humboldt Merchant Services review for more details about the U.S. company). Moneris Solutions offers comprehensive options aimed at retail, restaurant, professional service, and non-profit organizations as well as enterprise pricing for high volume merchants. Their solutions include credit card terminals, MOTO platforms, e-commerce processing, and iPad-based POS systems. In 2021, Moneris and BMO announced B2B Pay, an automated payment processing offering fueled by straight-through processing.
As of this review update, the Better Business Bureau is showing that Moneris is not BBB accredited and is assigning the company an “ A+ ” rating across three profiles. A total of 8 complaints have been filed against Moneris in the last 36 months. 5 complaints are about billing or collections issues, 1 relates to an advertising or sales issue, and 2 address problems with a product or a service. Only 3 of these 8 complaints were resolved by the company to the satisfaction of the merchant. The remaining 5 were resolved to the dissatisfaction of the merchant or received no final response.
Level 2 and level 3 processing rely upon different interchange rates than traditional consumer credit transactions. Accommodating those rates requires different payment processing technology from a merchant account provider to transmit the amount of data required to facilitate the transactions. These services are reserved for B2B and B2G purchases that utilize corporate credit cards.
Moneris has received more than 80 public complaints on various consumer protection websites. The majority of the reviews report unexpected or excessive cancellation fees, hidden per-transaction or monthly fees, unexpected renewal of contracts, broken promises of refunds and rebates, and difficulty resolving problems through the company’s customer service. The content of the company’s complaints have impacted Moneris’s rating in this section more so than the overall amount of complaints that the company has received.
In addition to its storefront payment processing services, Moneris Solutions also dedicates a portion of its website that advertises its virtual terminal and payment gateway services. However, pricing on either of those services is not disclosed. Its proprietary gateway offers the unique feature of being able to accommodate multi-currency pricing which allows merchants to accept payments in over 70 different currencies. Additional rates and fees, including gateway fees, technical support fees, batch fees, and additional transaction rates typically apply to these e-commerce services.
Moneris appears to market its services primarily through telemarketing and an inside sales force. There are also some complaints that describe an outside sales agent visiting a merchant on behalf of Moneris, which suggests that the company could hire independent sales agents.
It is unclear whether Moneris’s standard contract terms have changed under the ownership of Vantiv, but we’ve seen no evidence that this is the case. The company clearly conveys the interchange rates it relies upon. Merchants are advised to compare their processing agreements with Moneris to those offered by the cheapest merchant account providers.
