A patient portal is a type of personal health record (PHR) that is connected to an electronic health record (EHR) system. Patient portals provide a secure website through which patients can access their clinical data. They are a key component of most EHR architectures and an important focus of meaningful use because of their potential to streamline the delivery of patient-centered health care. Features of patient portals may include secure messaging, after-visit summaries, medication lists, allergy lists, laboratory results, and appointment scheduling.
