Aspirin Update:Many VCS patients are on aspirin as secondary prevention following a previous heart attack or known vascular disease and need to remain on aspirin therapy. It is patients with primary prevention (no prior cardiac or vascular history) that aspirin is likely to be unhelpful and possibly harmful. As always, check with your provider if you have questions.

A cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is a life-changing disease for you and your family. Accepting that you have had a CVA is hard. You and those close to you may feel angry, sad, or frightened. These feelings are normal. Talk to your caregivers, family, or friends about your feelings. You may also want to join a support group. This is a group of people who also had a CVA. Medicines and treatments will enter your port through tubing attached to the needle. The tubing used to give medicine or liquids must be changed. Ask how often to change the needle and tubing. You will need to know how to prepare the medicine and put it into the port. You will also need to know how to take the needle out.
The following are ways you can help prevent an infection: Wash your hands: Use soap or an alcohol-based hand rub to clean your hands.
You may have any of the following tests to diagnose CVA: CT scan: This is also called a CAT scan. A special x-ray machine uses a computer to take pictures of your brain. It may be used to look at bones, muscles, brain tissue, and blood vessels. You may be given dye before the pictures are taken.
