When registration is completed prior to an appointment, patients spend less time in the waiting room and more time engaged in their care.
Is your EHR vendor using Academy materials? Several EHR companies have signed licensing agreements with the Academy, allowing them to incorporate Academy patient education materials into their EHRs. These materials include more than 90 downloadable handouts about common eye-related issues, 3-D animations that illustrate standard procedures and treatment options, and educational videos that detail common ophthalmic conditions. “We integrated this content with our EHR system so when a patient receives their clinical summary, they also receive educational information based on their diagnosis. We can also add information such as supplemental brochures, customize information, or include links that redirect patients to the AAO website or our contact lens distributor for more information,” said Ms. Mullaney. For more information, including a list of participating EHR vendors, go to: http://store.aao.org/ehr-integration-information.html.
And now, with a portal, patients can access these materials online.
Asheville Eye Associates has a patient satisfaction survey built into their portal. “Satisfaction surveys are included with every e-mail that we send to our patients, including questions about our portal. We have had excellent feedback from everyone who has responded about the ease of our portal’s use. For the most part, our transition into portal use has been very smooth,” said Ms. Fridl.
A patient portal can be defined simply as a “secure online website that gives patients convenient 24-hour access to personal health information from anywhere with an Internet connection.”
In a world where consumers want access to everything online, a patient portal is fast becoming a necessity. Physicians who implement one stand to benefit in several ways, including reduced no-shows, shorter collection times, more engaged patients, and ultimately better care outcomes.
In order to comply with HIPAA regulations, all patient portal vendors must provide restricted access to protected health information using a secure username and password for each user.
While third-party patient portal vendors are incentivized to create bridges that will allow their systems to integrate with a wide variety of EHRs, it can be difficult to build a bridge for a system whose vendor refuses to cooperate. This can limit both users’ choice and efficient care coordination. If your practice uses one of these systems, your patient portal options may be limited.
BVCHC plans to evaluate the patient portal implementation through patient satisfaction surveys and by comparing responses between groups of registered portal users and patients who are not using this resource. As portal enrollment and use increase, BVCHC is also planning to examine whether use of the portal results in a reduced burden on the BVCHC call center.
Medical assistants promoted the patient portal as a way for patients to establish a direct line of communication with their provider. Patients registered with the portal can avoid using the BVCHC call center, which receives a large volume of calls.
Limitations of the selected EHR and patient portal, including secured messaging communications with patients in languages other than English, with the exception of patient education materials.
Facilitating the subsequent implementation of the NextGen Health Information Exchange (HIE) among other area practices also under the NextGen Umbrella to enhance continuity of care for patients and provide a common engine and system interfaces for use by participating practices, local laboratories and imaging facilities, hospitals, and consulting providers within the NextGen HIE network.
A message is instantly delivered to the patient’s e-mail address encouraging him or her to complete the second step of the patient portal enrollment process. Processes are also being put in place to allow patients to complete enrollment while on-site during a visit.
BVCHC found it helpful to designate point persons for portal enrollment, such as medical assistants, to engage patients one on one. Consequently, providers are not burdened with the enrollment process, but they can encourage patients to use the portal. Moreover, assigning a dedicated triage nurse to serve as the gatekeeper for messages coming through the portal has eased provider concerns about email volume and time required for patient communication.
Patient-Specific Education Resources.#N#EHR has an integrated patient education tool that allows clinical staff to search and select from more than 600 summaries on diagnoses and symptoms and more than 1,000 medications. Materials, which are available and English and Spanish, can be printed out and reviewed with patients at the time of the visit.
The MHS GENESIS Patient Portal is a secure website for 24/7 access to your health information, including managing appointments and exchanging messages with your care team. Along with the new electronic health record, the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal launched at Fairchild Air Force Base (AFB) in February 2017 and and later at Naval Hospital Oak Harbor, Naval Hospital Bremerton, and at Madigan Army Medical Center. On September 7, 2019, MHS GENESIS went live at CAL MED and all of its clinics.
Like all Army military treatment facilities, CAL MED currently uses several electronic health record systems for inpatient records , outpatient records, emergency room records, and other areas of care. While care teams can view patients' records in the different systems, this requires extra time to navigate all of the records. With MHS GENESIS, all patient records will be found in one single records system. In addition, for the first time ever, all military branches will use one electronic health records system so that no matter where patients receive their care, their records will follow them.
