What is the difference between select new patient and update encounter?

SELECT NEW PATIENT– This action allows you to change the display of encounters based on the patient. If you select a new patient, the display will include encounters or appointments for the selected patient. UPDATE ENCOUNTER– This action lets you edit an encounter that is associated with an appointment.

I'm trying to understand some of the relationships that are available from a FHIR API data perspective. Is there a relationship between appointment and encounter? I've been told that Cerner is a encounter driven application, so maybe the relationship to the appointment doesn't exist.

The Appointment/Encounter relationship model is implemented differently in FHIR than it is in Cerner Millennium. In Millennium the link is stored with the appointment, and FHIR has the linking stored on the encounter.

How to record a patient who declined to receive a visit summary?

You can record when a patient or guardian declined to receive a Patient Visit Summary report for the day’s appointment. Click on the Decline button to indicate the patient or guardian did not want the Patient Visit Summary. Alternatively, you can click Decline inside the Patient Visit Summary window.

What is a patient visit summary?

The Patient Visit Summary is an “end-of-visit” clinical summary report. It details everything that happened during an appointment or other encounter. The report optionally includes an overview of other patient medical information. You can also customize what appears on the report and configure special components which will include patient instructions and other information.

The Edit Outpatient Encounter option allows you to change four fields from the OUTPATIENT ENCOUNTER file (#409.68). These fields are set by the software and are not editable through VA FileMan. They may be changed only through this option or through the Encounter Information action found on the error display screen of the Correct Incomplete Encounters option.

The Incomplete Encounter Error Report is used to print all inconsistencies and missing data for a selected date range for encounter records which 1) have not been transmitted or 2) have been rejected by the Austin National Patient Care Database (NPCD).
