What is a CAH?

A critical access hospital (CAH) is a small facility that provides outpatient care as well as limited inpatient services to patients residing in remote, rural locations. The critical access designation is given by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) intended to protect the financial status of rural hospitals, prevent closures, and improve healthcare access for rural residents. The federal government created the Critical Access Hospital program in 1997 with the Balanced Budget Act. A CAH receives additional funding from Medicare and other benefits that can help reimburse costs to help prevent closure and gain access to cost-prohibitive technology and equipment. There are certain requirements a CAH must meet in order to keep its CMS designation. They must have fewer than 25 beds and with an average patient stay of fewer than 96 hours and be over 35 miles away from another hospital, with some exceptions.
