BirthCare & Women’s Health Ltd. is a practice of certified nurse-midwives located in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. We serve families desiring to birth in their home or in our nationally accredited birth center. We attend home births in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia within a 40-mile radius of Washington, D.C.
We were the first birth center to open in Pennsylvania in 1978, and one of the first 10 birth centers in the United States. We are accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers (CABC), We boast the lowest rate of primary cesarean section in the area.
You will have a private room for giving birth where you can make yourself comfortable, take a warm bath/Jacuzzi, wear your own clothing, play your favorite relaxation music and have nourishment when you feel hungry.

In addition to evidence-based care with improved health outcomes, midwives’ high-touch, low-tech approach is associated with lower costs for clients and insurers. Midwives take time to listen to you. Midwives believe that childbearing is normal and that you and your family should create the birth experience that will be meaningful to you.
Birth Care is a non-profit midwifery birth and women’s health care center offering health care by women, for women of all ages. Your tax-deductible donation helps to subsidize care for families in need and help keep healthcare affordable for the whole community. to keep you safer.
Clients cannot bring visitors to the birth center or office. One support person accompanies the woman for delivery. Clients can not come to visits if sick or coughing. Staff cannot come to work if sick. All non-critical office visits are postponed. Pregnant clients are still seen as needed.
The BirthCare Birth Center offers a labor and birthing area with two private rooms. Both have access to a large jetted Jacuzzi tub which helps many women relax during labor. One birthing room features a state-of-the-art birthing tub (See the video below). The other room features views of historic King Street, a queen size bed and en suite shower. A kitchen is also easily accessible so that you can bring your favorite nourishing comfort foods for you and your loved ones.
