What is Reach Out and Read?

Reach Out and Read is a national literacy program that distributes new books to infants and children up to the age of five. Children receive age-appropriate books at their wellness exams. Through the Reach Out and Read program at participating Neighborhood locations, more than 9,000 children receive a new book to take home and keep every year. Parents learn the importance of reading to their children out loud, which increases vocabulary and language skills, and ensures children are better prepared to enter preschool and kindergarten. Reading to a child also builds curiosity, cognitive ability, and strong memory skills, even before a child learns to talk. Neighborhood staff members work with families during pediatric exams to model reading out loud with their children. Our Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program (CPSP) offers a wide range of services to pregnant women on Medi-Cal, from conception through 60 days postpartum. In addition to standard obstetric services, eligible women receive enhanced services in the areas of nutrition, psychosocial, and health education. We have built strong partnerships with community organizations that specialize in providing social services designed to help you and your family achieve stability and thrive.
