The clinical sleep educator is a critical member of your Baptist Health team. He or she will spend time with you and your family, identifying your sleep-health needs and helping you understand the best methods for managing your condition. Our sleep educators offer education on the following therapies and technologies: 1 CPAP and BPAP mask fittings: If you are diagnosed with sleep apnea or another breathing issue, you may be prescribed a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or bilevel positive airway pressure (BPAP) device to use while you sleep. Both devices blow air at a comfortable and constant pressure through your airway to prevent snoring and help you sleep soundly. The mask with the device will be specially fitted for your comfort. 2 Desensitization training: Getting used to the CPAP mask while awake is an important step in using it effectively for better sleep. Desensitization training helps you get comfortable with the mask and the air pressure that comes from the device. 3 Sleep modification: We teach effective techniques to modify behavior and thought patterns that can help improve sleep quality without medication.
There are nearly 100 different known sleep disorders, each with different symptoms. Many can be treated with the help of highly trained healthcare professionals. The most common of these sleep disorders are: snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy and periodic limb movement.
Baptist Health also conducts in-home sleep studies. Similar to an in-lab study, a home study uses portable monitoring devices that you activate before you sleep. The data recorded by these devices is transferred to monitors at Baptist Health sleep centers.
You will be awakened by a technologist at an agreed-upon time. After your testing has been completed, a Board-certified doctor who specializes in sleep medicine will review the results in order to develop a personalized plan addressing your sleep issues.
Most studies are conducted at an outpatient sleep diagnostic center or hospital-based facility , depending on your preference and doctor’s orders. We offer studies at night or during daytime hours to accommodate your regular work/sleep patterns.
Narcolepsy – sudden, uncontrollable periods of falling asleep that can occur at any time during any type of activity. Parasomnia – unusual activities, like talking, walking or eating, that take place during sleep.
During your sleep study, sensors are placed on your skin and head which help monitor your sleep cycle and track your heart rate, brain waves, leg movements and body positioning. A registered sleep technician monitors your breathing, airflow and blood oxygen from a nearby observation station.
Restful sleep is essential to health and well-being, and many of us aren’t getting enough due to poor sleep habits or actual sleep disorders. An estimated one-third of all Americans have a sleep disorder, which could lead to chronic fatigue and health conditions like diabetes, heart disease or depression.
For those who qualify, sleep studies may even be performed in the comfort of their own home using monitoring equipment provided by our centers.
Fully accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Baptist Health Sleep Center-Little Rock combines comfortable, hotel-like ambiance with technologically advanced polysomnographic recording ability and diagnoses problems such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, night seizures, and restless leg syndrome, among others.

A sleep study is a test that records your nighttime sleep patterns to determine how well you sleep and how your body responds to sleep problems. These tests can help your doctor find out whether you have a sleep disorder along with its severity.
Mouthpiece . A mouthpiece , sometimes called an oral appliance, may help some people who have mild sleep apnea or who snore loudly but don’t have sleep apnea. A dentist or orthodontist can make a custom-fit plastic mouthpiece that will adjust your lower jaw and tongue to help keep your airways open while you sleep.
Better Sleep for a Healthier Life. A lack of deep, beneficial sleep can lead to a host of health problems, and unfortunately, most people aren’t getting enough rest. According to the National Sleep Foundation, two thirds of the population suffer from a sleep disorder, but at Baptist Health, we’re working to change that.
