How does ultrasound help with rheumatology?

One of the more exciting advances in interventional rheumatology at the Nasseri Clinic is the use of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound to help guide injections, such as steroid and glycosaminoglycan injections. The ultrasound instrument is used first to study the injured structure. Subsequently, the needle is introduced under the supervision of the ultrasound, helping to increase precision of the procedure. Ultrasound guidance facilitates a better outcome during injection procedures that would, in most cases, be difficult to attempt. Moreover, the use of ultrasound improves the accuracy and, therefore, the safety of many procedures by helping to locate the injured anatomy while avoiding adjacent anatomy, such as blood vessels and nerves.

What is ultrasound imaging?

Ultrasonography , commonly referred to as ultrasound imaging or sonography, is the use of an imaging instrument that uses reflected pulses of high frequency, referred to as ultrasonic, sound waves to study soft tissues, cartilage, bone surfaces, and fluid containing structures. Ultrasonographic imaging, once exclusively utilized by radiologists, is becoming more available in select rheumatology clinics and orthopedic centers. The Nasseri Clinic employs one of the most advanced ultrasound sonography devices available to study and treat rheumatology-related cases.
