As you could probably guess, emails sent from OU are meant to be seen by you alone. Sensitive information like coursework, advising topics and basic student information are often addressed in these private emails. Using an email address given to you by the university helps us ensure we are disclosing this information to the correct person — and not someone you would not want to see it.
This also protects you personally by minimizing the threat that someone can hijack your email account. If you associate a strong password with your OU account, change that password regularly and ensure it is protected, you will have a lower risk of someone logging into your account without your knowledge.
If you already know that you are checking your OU email, you don’t have to do anything. Congratulations! You are ready to go for the upcoming semester. If you aren’t sure, however, here are a couple of things you can do to get set up.
Very recently, some service providers and private email servers began blocking emails coming from the ou. edu domain. Since the majority of your professors, instructors, advisors and peers use ou.edu in their email addresses, this means that you might not be getting important messages that are sent to you from OU.
