Hematology-oncology refers to the combined medical practice of hematology (the study of the blood's physiology) and oncology (the study of cancer). This type of medicine diagnoses and treats cancerous blood disorders and cancers, and manages symptoms of these diseases and resultant tumors (if present).
If your primary care physician has recommended that you see a hematologist, it may be because you are at risk for a condition involving your red or white blood cells, platelets, blood vessels, bone marrow, lymph nodes, or spleen. Some of these conditions are: hemophilia, a disease that prevents your blood from clotting.
Hematologists are healthcare providers who specialize in diagnosing, treating and managing diseases that affect your blood, bone marrow and lymphatic system. Blood diseases may be benign (noncancerous) disorders or malignant (cancerous). Blood disorders and blood cancer may have mild symptoms or be life-threatening.
Here are six of those critical blood related diseases/conditions that might refer you to a hematologist.Leukemia. Leukemia is cancer of the blood or bone marrow and is caused by the proliferation of white blood cells. ... Lymphoma. ... Anemia. ... Sickle Cell Disease. ... Deep Vein Thrombosis. ... Sepsis.
Oncologists specialize in diagnosing and treating cancers. A hematologist oncologist specializes in both. You might see a hematologist oncologist if you have blood cancer or suspected blood cancer. If blood cancer runs in your family, you might also see one then, too.
The main difference between a medical oncologist and a hematologist is that a medical oncologist focuses generally on all types of cancers, but a Hematologist focuses on only blood disorders.

Blood plays an important role in how your body functions and supplies all of your organs with oxygen, nutrients, hormones and antibodies.
Symptoms of blood cancer vary by disease. Sometimes symptoms may not be present or they may be non-specific, but typically they include the following: 1 Fever 2 Chills 3 Fatigue 4 Weakness 5 Bone and joint pain 6 Weight loss 7 Night sweats 8 Swelling of lymph nodes, liver and spleen 9 Anemia
When you have leukemia, the bone marrow creates abnormal white blood cells, called leukemia cells. They don’t work like normal white blood cells, grow faster than normal cells and don’t stop growing when they should. Over time, they can crowd out normal blood cells, which may lead to serious problems, including anemia, bleeding and infections. They can also spread to lymph nodes or organs and cause swelling or pain.
Myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells. Plasma cells are white blood cells that produce disease- and infection-fighting antibodies in your body. Myeloma cells prevent the normal production of antibodies, leaving your body's immune system weakened and susceptible to infection.
In some cases, bone marrow biopsy, X-ray, MRI, PET and CT scans can be used to confirm the presence and extent of the spread of myeloma.
That’s why we offer comprehensive support services to ensure we meet the educational, nutritional and psychological needs of our patients. Additionally, we offer a specialized leukemia support group for current patients, survivors and caregivers to provide support, discussion and community.
Chemotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses drugs to destroy cancer cells, and may be used in combination with radiation therapy. It is the most common treatment for leukemia. At Mission, our medical oncologists and hematologists are experts in the blood-related processes, treatments and research options.
