The Family Practitioner is a specialist with a broad-based knowledge in all fields of medicine rather than an in-depth knowledge of a particular discipline. Most illnesses do not require the services of a specialist, but a Family Practitioner knows when those services are needed and who to call should it become necessary. The Family Practitioner coordinates the services of medical specialists, ancillary medical personnel (physical therapists, occupational therapists, dietitians etc.), and community health resources.
