Mazzoni Center provides vital health and social services to LGBTQ folks living in Philadelphia. Some staple services include family medical care, women’s and adolescent health, community health featuring a youth drop-in clinic, gender-affirming care, mental and behavioral health, as well as support groups. Some new initiatives include testing for COVID-19 and the very recent initiative to administer at-home tests for HIV via a mobile unit that is deployed throughout the city.
All of Mazzoni Center’s services for the community will be left unaffected, as the changes will take place in administrative positions rather than direct service positions. “When we were looking at the structure and evaluating the changes that we wanted to make, we had a couple of goals in mind,” said Manley, “We want to have a minimal impact to direct services.”
In 2019, after two years of negotiations, SEIU negotiated higher wages for Mazzoni Center employees, a tuition reimbursement program and even paid leave for gender-affirming surgeries.
Mazzoni Center suffers from an auto-immune condition. Quality of care and services at Mazzoni Center are incredible due in no small part to the talant and dedication of frontline staff, but the board and admin are pathological. The administration and management attack front-line staff without warning, without cause, and without repercussion. Care Services department is generally the best to work for in terms of support and career development, but job stability is still nonexistent.
Mazzoni Center is a great place to work for someone with an advanced degree. This privilege allows you access to greater paying positions, a lot of freedom in managing your day to day, and autonomy. Mazzoni Center is not so great at providing equitable opportunities for all its employees, particularly its front-line staff who are majority people of color, underpaid, made to clock-in, etc. Managers are predominantly white, cis folks. Hierarchically, this creates a power imbalance that contradicts the very values (of furthering progress and equity) that Mazzoni purports to strive for.
