Since its founding in 1972, the Helen Ross McNabb Foundation has worked diligently to support the work of the Helen Ross McNabb Center . Due to her persuasive efforts, one of the first community mental health clinics was established in the state of Tennessee. The agency was first created for children but quickly grew to also serve adults in 1955. The clinic opened in a house near the University of Tennessee campus in 1948.

The outpatient addiction treatment programs do not require the patient to live on-site. They are successfully designed to provide effective treatment therapies to patients while they continue to reside where they live. Routine visits are made to the drug treatment facility where the patient undergoes their designated treatment plan based on their initial assessment.
