Pursuant to the Board and Medical Staff policy, providers seeking appointment are asked to complete a State of Illinois Health Care Professional Credentialing and Business Data Gathering Form and our hospital’s application and privileging packet. Applicants will also be provided a list of required documents needed for completion of the credentialing process. An application fee is also required for all initial appointments and reappointments and is determined by the type of privileges you are requesting. Any missing items or incomplete forms may delay the credentialing process.

Our rigorous credentialing process follows Federal and State regulatory requirements as well as accreditation standards for verifying the education, training, licensure, competence, and background to ensure that privileges are only granted to highly qualified physicians and other medical providers.
The coders will review a patient’s electronic health record and assign the proper diagnosis codes to the patient in order for billing to be completed. There are strict federal, state and CMS guidelines that must be followed within the coding department to ensure the proper billing of the patient’s hospital stay.
The Transition Advocate is a unique position staffed by a knowledgeable nurse who can visit the patient both in the hospital and at home. This nurse can answer questions after discharge, follow up to confirm the patient is following discharge instructions such as physician’s appointments, and determine if the patient has any needs after discharge that were not previously anticipated. The Transition Advocate can also follow up with phone calls to answer any questions the patient may have.
Health Information Management (HIM) The Health Information Management (HIM) Department (also known as Medical Records) plays a vital role in the patient healthcare setting. HIM is responsible for the storage of all inpatient, observation, same day center charts, emergency department and behavioral health charts.
Case Management provides a variety of services throughout the hospital stay. The Case Managers perform utilization review to ensure the patient receives the proper level of care along with related tests and treatments and communicate with the insurance company to ensure payment. Discharge planning is done by the Case Managers to establish a safe, effective transition from the hospital to the proper setting. Any needs post-discharge such as home care services, equipment and medication assistance are also set up by Case Management. They act as advocates for the patients to ensure the highest quality care at the lowest cost.

The inpatient unit is divided into two wings. The first is a general adult unit, housing individuals with psychiatric disorders which do not involve dementia. The second wing is a geropsychiatric unit which treats individuals whose psychiatric condition is complicated by dementia.
Inpatient hospitalization tends to be brief, with the average stay being approximately one week. As patients make progress, they begin the transition to less intensive levels of care. This may include return home, placement in a nursing home, or referral to rehabilitation services.
Before discharge patients are made appointments with a medical provider for ongoing medication management and with the most appropriate means of therapeutic aftercare for further progress toward their treatment goals .
In 2018, Harrisburg Medical Center and Southern Illinois Psychiatry joined together to create HMC Outpatient Behavioral Health. This joint venture has the same providers offering the same compassionate behavioral health care you received from Southern Illinois Psychiatry but now with more clinic locations to serve you better. We offer comprehensive outpatient behavioral health services for patients ages 6 and older. Services are available at HMC’s family practice clinics located in Marion, Harrisburg, and Eldorado. You do not have to be a primary care patient of these clinics to receive treatment.
