How do you know if you have carpal tunnel?

The main symptom of carpal tunnel is tingling in the fingers (except for the little finger). The sensation is often similar to the tingling sensation experienced when your feet fall asleep. People suffering from carpal tunnel have worse symptoms at night and often wake up with the need to shake up their hand at night. As the carpal tunnel problem worsens, the pain becomes more constant and the hands become weaker and clumsier. As the disease progresses, the fingertips become more numb and hand function deteriorates. The median nerve innervates the muscle that causes the thumb to oppose to the other fingers. Weakness and then atrophy of this muscle which is irreversible significantly impairs hand function. Unfortunately, because the problems develop slowly over time, many patients accommodate to the problem and present with very advanced disease when the nerve is dead and the muscles are gone.

What is the carpal tunnel?

Carpal Tunnel or Media Nerve Entrapment Syndrome. The Carpal Tunnel is an arch formed by the wrist bones and the carpal ligament on top. This anatomical structure resembles a tunnel with a road + the hole in the mountain. The Carpal tunnel is normally very crowded.

Why do we release carpal tunnel?

Typically patients will complain that they are dropping objects from their hand or that they have trouble buttoning their clothes. When we find evidence that the nerve is not functioning normally, we recommend release of the carpal tunnel to relieve the symptoms , prevent more permanent damage and muscle loss.

What causes the thumb to oppose to the other fingers?

As the disease progresses, the fingertips become more numb and hand function deteriorates. The median nerve innervates the muscle that causes the thumb to oppose to the other fingers. Weakness and then atrophy of this muscle which is irreversible significantly impairs hand function.

Which structure traverses the tunnel to flex the digits?

Many structures traverse it on their way from the forearm to the hand. Nine tendons from the forearm muscles (two per finger except the thumb) traverse the tunnel to flex the digits. But the most sensitive and the most delicate structure traversing it is the MEDIAN NERVE.

Can typing cause carpal tunnel?

Contrary to popular belief, typing on the keyboard is not really a cause of carpal tunnel syndrome. If it were, we would have a catastrophic epidemic public health issue since millions of people spend their time on the keyboard. It is only after prolonged, un-usual, extensive overuse of the hands that carpal tunnel could emerge; and this only in predisposed individuals.

Yamel, Dr. Khouri & Jorge THANK YOU

It takes a good doctor to repair a hand, but it takes a great doctor to repair a hand and still calm a scared patient’s nerves. I was introduced to the Miami Hand Center when Yamel showed up at my bedside in Mercy Hospital to look at my injury. I had slipped in my kitchen and fallen on a glass.

What is the best way to treat chronic pain in the wrist?

Chronic Wrist Pain: Arthroscopic surgery is an efficient way to find the source of chronic pain within the wrist when other examinations have failed. Once the issue is spotted the surgeon could treat the problem at that moment.

Why does my hand feel numb?

Carpal Tunnel Release: Carpal tunnel syndrome causes numbness or a tingling sensation in the hand. The sensation is similar to millions of ants roaming around your hand. Due to the natural tightness in space underneath the thick wrist band, pressure may build from irritation or swelling of tissues. Arthroscopic surgery could provide relief by cutting the band that wraps the tissues. giving it more breathing room and reduce further inflammation.

How long should you keep your wrist elevated after arthroscopic surgery?

Sometimes a splint is used. After Arthroscopic surgery has been performed it is highly recommended that the wrist is elevated for the next 2-3 weeks . Bandages should be replaced, kept clean, and dry. When possible and an ice pack should be used to keep swelling to a minimum.

How many centimeters are incisions in wrist surgery?

The incision is between 1-2 centimeters and allows the surgeon the freedom to travel the bones, ligaments, and tendons in search of the problem. Two or more incisions are made on the back of the wrist. The instruments are inserted at which point the joint can be viewed clearly. The procedure allows the doctor to fully diagnose the hand and determine the appropriate treatment. Another instrument called a shaver is used in combination with the arthroscope to cut off pieces of torn tissues.
