Where do community occupational therapy and physiotherapy services work?

The orthopaedic and rheumatology hand therapy team are in Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre (South) Level 0, on the main Wonford Hospital site. Our Community Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy team works across Exeter, East and Mid Devon in individual’s homes as well as in community hospitals.

What is the background of a physical therapist?

Therapists' education includes an extensive background in the sciences, focusing on physics, anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and kinesiology. With this background, physical therapists examine the body as a whole rather than just individual body parts to determine the biomechanics which caused the current injury.

Myofascial Release is a soft tissue technique involving gentle sustained pressure and stretch to reduce the restrictions and shortening of fascial connective tissue to reduce pain and restore mobility.

What is hand therapy?

Hand therapy is the art and science of rehabilitation for complex injuries to the upper quadrant (hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder). Practitioners at Exeter Hospital are occupational therapists, many of whom have pursued their certification in hand therapy (CHT).

Treatments

Hand Therapy team#N#We provide individualised or group treatments for patients, supporting them to return to function - including work, sport and leisure activities. This includes expert advice and education, splinting, exercise therapy, scar management and electrotherapy.

Our team

Occupational Therapists work as a key part of the hospital and community multi-disciplinary teams, across many specialities.

Where to find us

Our inpatient physiotherapists are based within the therapy department, Level 0 Area J, on the main hospital site at Wonford; they work across all ward areas and at the Mardon.

Our Community Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy team provide services across Exeter, East and Mid Devon in individual’s homes as well as in community hospitals.

Clinics

Outpatient services: mainly 8am-5pm, Monday to Friday; some weekend clinics.

What is Kirsten's job?

As an Occupational Therapist, Kirsten specializes in hand and upper extremity injuries as well as visual and cognitive rehabilitation for concussion patients. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and getting outdoors whether it’s running, biking, skiing or horseback riding.

Where is Matt from?

Matthew is a graduate from the University of New England where he received a Bachelor’s in Health Wellness & Occupational Studies in 2018 and a Master’s in Occupational Therapy in 2020. As an Occupational Therapist, Matt guides patients through their upper extremity rehabilitation as they return to their functional life roles.
