There are two options for setting up a patient portal. The first option is a functional Patient Portal, which is included with OpenEMR (The Native Patient Portal ). The second option is using the CMS patient portal, which utilizes a set of APIs included within OpenEMR. The second option uses a WordPress installation as the patient interface, providing a rich platform for web site development and secure isolation from OpenEMR without requiring a third party service. (The WordPress portal is under reconstruction)
Important aspects of the CMS Portal are: Security. A compromise of the public portal is not a compromise of OpenEMR. No need to trust and pay for an outside service for portal hosting and management. Anyone who can set up and maintain a WordPress web site can operate their own portal.
As the portal is based on the world's most popular content management system, it is easily made an integral part of a more general public web site for the practice. The full power of WordPress and its more than 35,000 available plug-ins are available to enrich the functionality of the site. E-commerce is one example.

As of OpenEMR 5.0.2, Jerry Padgett (OpenEMR forum: @sjpadgett) added some functionality to the Patient Portal documents template module. Although it was originally intended for producing documents by the patient when logged into their portal, it can also be used by clinic staff outside the portal, working in the EMR.
These templates are plain text files that have a patient's data, derived primarily from their demographics, inserted into the output document in the same way a 'mail merge' function would. The patient data to be inserted are indicated in the template by tags of text enclosed in {curly braces}.
When the next user with suitable access permissions logs into the EMR after that, they will see a notification: 'Portal Alert', at the top right corner of initial EMR screen (arrow)
The 'new ' Patent Portal Document Template has added considerable functionality to the document- producing capability of OpenEMR, with more to come.
The paper registration forms can be replaced by a digital framework to handle all of these tasks , offered by a Patient Portal Electronic Health Record (EMR) System. This also saves the hassle of scanning the paperwork since all the paperwork is recorded digitally in the first place. These digital notes also include general health assessments for patients or satisfaction surveys which help to get real-time feedback.
Most of these EMR Systems have an exclusive e-Prescription (e-Rx) module for patients to enter their information and then submit the prescription request. The staff of the provider then verifies this request and takes the next step.
A strong EMR Software ensures the safety and security of medical records and all the related patient information and guarantees HIPAA Compliance providing them privacy (especially during the patient’s communication with their doctor via Patient Portal). Top EMR Software Vendors from today ( AdvancedMD, PrognoCIS, Modernizing Medicine, Chirotouch, Kareo, etc.) use data encryption technologies and other advanced tools in every section of the EMR Software to make sure that they safeguard patient records.

Like all other software solutions needed by a medical practice, it is very important for a healthcare organization to have a strong billing system to be able to communicate with insurance companies and to charge all the services rendered. A Medical Billing Software works best when integrated with EMR software. The clinical documentation complies with all the mandatory standards and forms a financial document that is sent electronically to insurance carriers or financiers so that they can validate and process at their end. This helps streamline operations and various administrative tasks and makes sure everyone is on the same page where financial matters are concerned. By using the Medical billing Software system, practices are able to produce patient statements, confirm patient eligibility, and generate claims and much more. Medical billing solutions integrated with EMRs prove to be ideal for healthcare organizations who wish to manage to bill in-house.
Often belonging to the same medical specialty, the medium-sized practices require unique features such as interoperability, dedicated customer support, multi-device support as well as extensive reporting functionality to keep an eye on the overall performance of the practice, as their budget is also comparatively larger.
