It is each client’s personal responsibility to maintain routine primary care and gynecological evaluations including but not limited to pap smears and mammograms. Pregnancy is not without risk; therefore, before the initiation of all Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) cycles, clients are encouraged to be evaluated for general overall health. Chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and asthma should be well controlled before attempting to conceive. Women who have a medical disorder, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, should talk with their primary care provider and/or Obstetrician/Gynecologist before attempting pregnancy. It is important that health problems are under control. Our physicians or a member of our clinical staff may suggest further testing such as a complete physical and a signed medical clearance from a primary care provider or cardiologist and an Obstetrician/Gynecologist as there are increased risks for women with a medical condition. Women over the age of 35 may also be at increased risk for medical complications during pregnancy. In addition, women planning to pursue fertility treatments should optimize their weight. Obesity has been associated with infertility, a reduced chance of success with an increase in the risk of miscarriage and preterm birth. Your primary care physician can help you determine your ideal weight and refer you to appropriate resources for weight management.
