How are video games used in education?

However, can video games still be used as a form of education once we get into higher forms of education such as university level work? In current day, universities across the country have begun to add video games into their daily class, using games to teach history, mythology, literature, and even social issues. As video games have advanced in gameplay so has their potential to become seriously analyzed by college classes. Even when games lack complete accuracy they can still be used alongside text to give students an in depth look at subjects that they normally would not have studied on their own. By comparing and contrasting the world of the game and the actual real world events students get an in depth look on how certain events or ideas have influenced popular media.

How long have video games been around?

Video games have been around for nearly 40 years. Even longer if you include the crude basic tic tac toe games that occurred in 1950s. Back then it was difficult to show a couple bits on the screen much less display the images we find common place in every day games. Throughout their short lifetime, video games have made huge leaps and bounds in what they can do. For most of the time they’ve been around they have been viewed as a casual form of entertainment with its main goal being to give its players a pleasant experience. However, as we get closer to the modern day, video games have started to leave the generic role of entertainment and become picked up in other fields varying from teaching, to sports, to business, and even military. Over the quarter I will be going into detail about the various roles that video games have begun to fill in the recent years.
