Echocardiograms are extremely common procedures. In fact, a sonographer in a hospital setting performs an average of 6 echo tests per day. Read on for a quick echocardiogram guide to help you understand echocardiogram results.
It uses a transducer moved across your chest to produce the heart image. A transesophageal echo test is performed with a tube transducer in your throat.
Last, a stress echocardiogram occurs during exercise on a treadmill or bike. This is to monitor your heart’s response to physical activity.
Doctors recommend echocardiograms to diagnose heart conditions. An echocardiogram reading can help a doctor evaluate if you have a heart murmur, valve problems, or atrial fibrillation. It can also detect fluid around the heart, clotting, or thickening of the heart tissue.
The test monitors ultrasound, high-frequency sound waves, which are projected through the chest and bounce back to create an image of your heart. The test is useful for diagnosing and monitoring heart problems and creating treatment plans.
The heart’s walls won’t pump properly if the walls contract too little or too much. This may indicate a prior heart attack or heart disease. Your echo results will also tell if the valves of your heart are opening and closing properly. If so, blood flow is normal.
Effective June 17, 2021, Grady Health System will allow two visitors per day for inpatients and those in our Emergency Department. There are a number of restrictions and rules to this expanded visitation. Please review our updated visitation guidelines.
The most common symptoms are fever, cough, fatigue, body aches, sore throat, and congestion, but we are also seeing reports of diarrhea and loss of smell . Less than 10% of patients have more severe symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, new confusion, or inability to arouse.
Have risk factors for a more severe infection such as heart, lung, or kidney disease, diabetes or a compromised immune system. Work or live in a communal setting (e.g. a hospital, daycare, college dorm, or nursing home).
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends other everyday preventive measures such as vigorous hand-washing. We should counsel our patients to follow all of these recommended precautions. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) offers more information specific to cancer patients and COVID-19.

Keep in mind that an echo is one method a cardiologist uses to make a diagnosis. Your cardiologist will interpret the results in the context of other tests and your physical exam. Use this article as a guide to help you understand your echo results and discuss them with your doctor.
After an echo, your doctor may ask you to have other tests, such as a chest X-ray, EKG ( electrocardiogram ), or cardiac catheterization. These tests can give your doctor more information about your heart and may help explain your symptoms.
306. Getty. An echocardiogram—echo for short—is an ultrasound of your heart. Echocardiograms show the size and structure of the heart and what’s happening in the different chambers as your heart is beating. Keep in mind that an echo is one method a cardiologist uses to make a diagnosis. Your cardiologist will interpret the results in the context ...
Before your doctor leaves the exam room, make sure you know what needs to happen next. Make sure you understand exactly what you need to do, such as make an appointment with another doctor, or call to schedule another test. Know when you should call your doctor or make another appointment.
A normal result is when the heart’s chambers and valves appear typical and work the way they should. More specifically, this means that: There are no visible blood clots or tumors in your heart. Your heart valves open and close properly. They are not leaking blood or showing signs of infection.
Blood clots in one of the chambers of heart are often due to atrial fibrillation . One or more heart valves are not opening or closing properly. This might be a sign of heart valve disease, which can damage the heart muscle. Heart walls are too thin or thick, or heart chambers are too large.
Your heart walls and chambers are normal in size and the heart wall muscles move properly. The heart lining has a normal thickness and does not contain extra fluid. Other conditions can cause the same symptoms that prompted the need for an echocardiogram in the first place.
An exercise stress echo takes about 30 to 60 minutes. Dobutamine stress echocardiogram. Sometimes medicine called dobutamine is used instead of exercise to stress your heart. For this test, you will lie on your back or left side on a bed or exam table, and a baseline echocardiogram will be done.
Stress echocardiogram. A stress echocardiogram can cause dizziness, low blood pressure, shortness of breath, nausea, irregular heartbeats, and heart attack.
A transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE), Doppler echocardiogram, and stress echocardiogram are performed by a specially trained ultrasound technician. A transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) is performed by a cardiologist with the help of assistants. You may receive an IV so you can get medicine during the test.
The different types of echocardiograms are: 1 Transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE). This is the most common type. Views of the heart are obtained by moving the transducer to different locations on your chest or abdominal wall. 2 Stress echocardiogram. During this test, an echocardiogram is done both before and after your heart is stressed either by having you exercise or by injecting a medicine that makes your heart beat harder and faster. A stress echocardiogram is usually done to find out if you might have decreased blood flow to your heart ( coronary artery disease ). 3 Doppler echocardiogram. This test is used to look at how blood flows through the heart chambers, heart valves, and blood vessels. The movement of the blood reflects sound waves to a transducer. The ultrasound computer then measures the direction and speed of the blood flowing through your heart and blood vessels. Doppler measurements may be displayed in black and white or in color. 4 Transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE). For this test, the probe is passed down the esophagus instead of being moved over the outside of the chest wall. TEE shows clearer pictures of your heart, because the probe is located closer to the heart and because the lungs and bones of the chest wall do not block the sound waves produced by the probe. A sedative and an anesthetic applied to the throat are used to make you comfortable during this test.
A good view might be hard to get because of certain conditions such as obesity or chronic lung disease. Transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) and Doppler echocardiogram. You will lie on your back or on your left side on a bed or table.
The transducer is usually moved to different areas on your chest that provide specific views of your heart. The test usually takes from 30 to 60 minutes. When the test is over, the gel is wiped off and the electrodes are removed. Exercise stress echocardiogram.
Serious problems with your esophagus, such as a very narrow esophagus, dilated (engorged) veins in the esophagus that could rupture and bleed (esophageal varices), or severe arthritis of your neck. Trouble swallowing. A bleeding disorder, such as hemophilia. Results.
This helps when it comes to interpreting the echocardiogram reads, or echo reads. Often, shortness of breath or chest pain leads your cardiologist to order the test. It can help diagnose heart issues without invasive techniques. Some reasons you might have an echocardiogram:
It’s a great way for your doctor to see how it’s functioning in real time. Doctors use a value called ejection fraction or (EF) to determine how well the heart is pumping. This is often expressed as a percentage, with the normal range between 55%-70%.
If you have any of the symptoms of heart trouble, see your cardiologist and ask for an echocardiogram. This includes chest pain, weakness, numbness, or shortness of breath.
An enlarged heart can be a sign of more serious diseases. During your echo, the doctor will measure the walls and chambers of your heart. Your echo read will show the size of your left ventricle (LV), right ventricle (RV), left atria (LA), and right atria (RA). These are the four main chambers of the heart.
If a part of your heart is not pumping at the same level as the rest, you could have heart damage from a heart attack. It’s also a good way to see early warnings of heart disease. They do this by measuring heart rate intervals.
An echocardiogram is basically a sonogram of the heart, but if you’re not a cardiologist, they can be tough to interpret. In this guide, however, we’ll give you some pointers.
One of the most exciting advances in cardiology is the rise of telecardiology. You can now receive and interpret your test results remotely, saving you a trip to the doctor’s office.
When you have a medical test, no matter what kind of test it is, ask how soon the results will be ready. You may be told 10 minutes, two days, or even a week. It’s not that you are trying to hurry anyone; you are only managing your expectations. Ask how you will be notified of the results.

They should tell you they will call you. From there, pin down when you can expect the phone call. 1 You should expect to hear from them by the end of the day on which the results will be available. If you are told that you will not hear unless there is a problem, reply that that’s not good enough.
Call to get your results if the expected phone call time passes. If you don’t hear by the time they tell you that you will hear, call them. If they take a message and you don't hear back within a few hours, then call again. Continue to pursue those results until someone calls you with them.
A rule has been enacted by the federal government, which requires labs to provide test results to patients who request them. The labs have up to 30 days to supply the results to patients, which they may do either electronically or on paper. 2 The law took effect in October 2014.
Physicians often fail to provide them, even when they turn up problematic results. Patients need to step up. Yes—patients need to stay on top of their providers until they get the answers they need. You can even get our results directly from the lab where the test was done, if necessary.
