For the first part of his medical career following completion of training in 1995, Dr. Afrin practiced in the full range of hematology/oncology , often coming to take on his academic department’s “mysterious” cases, and it was in that capacity that in 2008 he began learning how to recognize, diagnose, and treat MCAS . Soon realizing not only that MCAS was polar opposite in prevalence to the rarity of mastocytosis but also that MCAS patients, once properly diagnosed and treated, often gained substantial improvement despite frustrating prior decades of mysterious sickness, he came to focus in this emerging area, seeing a growing number of patients, conducting research, and publishing, presenting, and teaching locally, nationally, and internationally all over the world. He is seen by many as an expert and global leader in MCAS.
Dr. Afrin now focuses exclusively in MCAD (virtually all of it MCAS, with very few mastocytosis patients, consistent with the rarity of that condition; note that the *symptoms* of mastocytosis almost always are due, as in MCAS, to the inappropriate *activation* of the patient’s cancerous mast cells rather than to the grossly excessive numbers of those cells). He is taking new patients, including those with proven MCAS and those just suspected to have MCAS . Dr. Afrin does not require new patients be referred by another health care professional; his new patients may self-refer if they desire. Dr. Afrin pursues diagnostic work (including testing for MCAS as well as overlapping/mimicking conditions as clinically indicated) and, for patients diagnosed with MCAS, offers either direct care himself (for patients who reside sufficiently closely so that he can prescribe and manage MCAS -targeted treatments in a professionally responsible fashion) or extensive therapeutic recommendations and ongoing guidance/counseling for the distantly located patient’s local physicians who will have to be the providers responsibly prescribing/managing direct care for those patients. Dr. Afrin offers ongoing follow-up appointments to all of his established patients.
