Fragile X syndrome is the most common inherited cause of mental retardation. It is caused by a trinucleotide repeat expansion of three bases that occurs in the fragile X mental retardation 1 gene ( FMR1) at Xq27.3. A small expansion, or premutation, has approximately 55–200 CGG repeats and is usually not associated with cognitive deficits.
