Patient Health Questionnaire-9 Introduction The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) is a self-report version of the Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders (PRIME-MD) diagnostic tool for common mental disorders. The PHQ-9 is a brief, 9-item scale that includes only the depression-related items from the PHQ.

In total, 323 patients who were eligible and approached completed both the PHQ-9 and SCID between December, 2017 and April, 2018 thus we had no refusals. Among the 323 patients, 127 (39.3%) had diabetes only while 196 (60.7%) had both diabetes and hypertension.
The validity, ease of administration and brevity of the PHQ-9 imply that it will be a valuable tool for identifying comorbid depression in patients with non communicable diseases using a cut-point of ≥9. Clinicians in NCD clinics when choosing a tool for screening depression should consider the PHQ-9.

The PHQ-9 is derived from the Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders interview schedule which utilizes criteria set forth in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) to diagnose depression
The PHQ-9 was found to be more accurate in diagnosing ‘major depressive disorder’ than either the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) or the Well Being Index (WBI-5) Suggested cut-off to indicate depression is PHQ-9 > 11.
Total scores of 5, 10, 15, and 20 represent cutpoints for mild, moderate, moderately severe and severe depression, respectively.
