How to make a referral to the UCC

Are you interested in helping your friend, student or child? Are you worried about their well-being? Know your limits as a help-giver; only go as far as your expertise, training and resources allow. When a student needs more help than you are able or willing to give, it is time to make a referral to a professional.

What is the scope of services and brief therapy statement?

The UCC Scope of Services and Brief Therapy Statement describes the UCC's range of counseling services, initial assessment process and brief therapy treatment approach. The statement outlines concerns commonly addressed in brief therapy, as well as concerns often addressed in terms of the process of referral to services outside of the UCC.

How long are counseling records kept?

Files are maintained for at least seven years, and then destroyed in a manner consistent with all applicable confidentiality laws and policies.

What is the UCC?

The UCC provides a variety of free and confidential counseling and referral services delivered by professional counselors.

Can a client's records be disclosed?

All client records are confidential; no information can be revealed or released to anyone, including parents or legal guardians, without a release signed by the student. Exceptions may occur if a clinical judgment has been made that an individual's mood or conduct indicates the possibility of harm to self or others. Also, there are rare circumstances where a clinician may be required by law or by court order to reveal particular information about a patient.

Services

The DSHSC provides evidence-based psychiatric consultation and treatment which recognizes and promotes the importance of students being connected with counseling services. Clinical research has shown that the combination of counseling with psychiatric medication is more effective than either of the approaches by themselves.

Appointments

Initial appointments#N#These are 90 minutes in length and may be with our psychiatrist, a nurse practitioner or a medical resident working in our clinic. If you miss your initial appointment or are more than 15 minutes late to the scheduled appointment, you may have to reschedule.

Withdrawals

The Dean of Students (DOS) Office processes student withdrawals and re-enrollments. Students must have their medical/psychological providers complete and send in the withdrawal and re-enrollment forms. The forms are reviewed by the DSHSC and/or the University Counseling Center (UCC).

What is group counseling?

Group counseling. Group counseling involves a small number of individuals working together on common problems or concerns. Counseling groups may focus on a particular issue (for example, exam anxiety or relationship issues) or they can be less structured sessions that explore broader issues or student concerns.

Why is group therapy important?

It's very important that members feel safe in the group. Group counselors are there to help develop a safe environment and will work to maintain a constructive and caring atmosphere for all group members. A benefit of group therapy is receiving feedback from others who are trying to help.

How long does a group meet?

Typically, groups meet for 90 minutes each week and are led by one or two staff counselors. Most group offerings require that a prior screening appointment be scheduled with the group facilitator so that further information may be provided and the appropriateness of participation can be discussed and evaluated.

What is a workshop in psychology?

A workshop is a series of seminars focused on a particular topic. The seminars generally can be attended one at a time, though they are designed to be sequential in order. A seminar might consist of some psychoeducation around a specific or focused topic followed by a skills demonstration or discussion.

Is group counseling more effective than individual counseling?

For certain concerns and/or problems (e.g., social anxiety, interpersonal problems) group counseling can be even more effective than individual counseling. There is evidence for the effectiveness of group counseling for the following issues: Anxiety. Depression. Poor self-esteem and lack of self-confidence.
