“Ground rules” for understanding more about DEXA scan results DEXA scan should be several pages long, have many charts and x-rays of the spine and hip. Small changes in bone mineral density are not significant. Bone density tests do not truly measure bone density. Bone density changes are related to life stage.
Bone Densitometry (DEXA) A bone density scan, also called DEXA, uses an X-ray to measure the bone mineral content and density. A DEXA scan produces more detailed images than a standard X-ray and helps to identify fragile bones before they break. A DEXA measures the bone density of spine, pelvis, lower arm and thigh.

Obtain copies of your full bone density reports from your DEXA or DXA scans. You’ll want to look at all the results, not just the summary page. Small changes in bone mineral density are not significant.

Small changes in bone mineral density are not significant. Research has shown that at least a 5-6% change on a bone density test is needed to be sure that any change is not simply due to placement on the machine. Bone density tests do not truly measure bone density.
Bone density tests do not truly measure bone density. DXA calculates BMD using area, so it’s not an accurate measurement of true bone mineral density. Those with smaller body size and/or thin, small bones will not get a true measure of their bone density from the scan. Bone density changes are related to life stage.
DEXA alone can’t predict fracture risk. To understand if your bones are at risk of fracture, we need to understand all your risk factors, including rate of bone loss. One snapshot of bone density is not enough to decide that you need bone drugs. [For more, read my blog, Bone density tests aren’t enough.

The non-dominant arm (the arm you use the least) is usually examined, unless there is a history of a fracture of that arm. The computer will calculate the amount of photons that are not absorbed by the bones to determine the bone mineral content. The bone mineral density will then be calculated by a radiologist.
Ensure that you have not had a barium or nuclear medicine exam within the past 72 hours. EAT/DRINK: Do not take calcium supplements 24 hours prior to your exam.
There is typically no special type of care after a DEXA scan. You may resume your normal diet and activities, unless your doctor advises you differently. Your doctor may give you additional or alternate instructions after the procedure, depending on your particular situation.
Your child should wear comfortable clothing, and all jewelry (or metal objects) should be removed. Calcium supplements should be avoided for 24 hours before the test, and if your child has had a test using barium or oral contrast, the scan will be postponed for 10-14 days.
Your child will lie on a padded X-ray table and ask to be completely still, while a machine is used to scan the bones (it usually takes 15-30 minutes). The scan usually examines the spine and the whole body.
The DEXA scan is a low dose X-ray, and radiation is similar to a chest X-ray. You can discuss this with your pediatric radiologist if you require any further information. Reviewed by: Dr. Rachel M Pevsner Crum, DO.
Because most of us reach peak bone mass in our thirties. Our bones are at their strongest and least likely to fracture. Those in their thirties are less likely to break a hip in a fall or have a vertebra collapse spontaneously. (Which leads to dowagers hump .)
1. The column marked BMD gives your bone mineral den sity - the number of grams per centimeter of bone. Numbers of +1.0 or above are good. 2. The column marked T score shows how your bone mineral density compares with women in their thirties, the peak bone density years. when it is highly unlikely that you would suffer a fracture. ...
You can understand your dexa scan results. And understanding those results is important if you are serious about strengthening your bones. You need to understand exactly where you are NOW if you want to plan to be somewhere else in a year or so.
