What are the chief benefits of MHS GENESIS?

MHS GENESIS is the first Department of Defense-wide electronic health record to be used by all military treatment facilities. By the time that MHS GENESIS is fully implemented throughout all of the DoD, patients will be able to receive care from any military treatment facility knowing that their health records will follow them.

How is MHS GENESIS different from CAL MED's current electronic health record systems?

Like all Army military treatment facilities, CAL MED currently uses several electronic health record systems for inpatient records, outpatient records, emergency room records, and other areas of care. While care teams can view patients' records in the different systems, this requires extra time to navigate all of the records.

What will I notice about what's new with MHS GENESIS?

The primary difference that patients will notice is the Patient Portal. While receiving care at MTFs which use MHS GENESIS, patients will no longer use RelayHealth and Tricare Online except for limited functions, such as requesting new providers.

When will I be able to start using the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal?

While patients may be able to log on to the Patient Portal and explore it during the weeks leading up to the transition to MHS GENESIS, the Patient Portal will not be active until September 7, 2019.

When patients move, will their new military treatment facilities be using MHS GENESIS?

The Department of Defense has a multi-year plan for all military treatment facilities to transition to MHS GENESIS. CAL MED is in the second wave of military treatment facility to transition to MHS GENESIS.

What happens if your insurance doesn't cover Classic Air Care?

If your insurer does not include Classic Air Care as a preferred provider, you may be billed for non-covered charges or be responsible for reduced benefits. Please review your statement that will show which insurance carrier was billed, and if changes are needed, contact our office as soon as possible.

What is UCR in insurance?

Many insurance companies limit payments using a fee schedule of “usual, customary and reasonable” (UCR) allowances. Classic Air Care fees may differ from insurance companies’ fee schedules. The patient is responsible for charges that exceed the usual and customary amount.

Is a classic membership only valid on claims?

Any insured and/or patient cost share (after insurance payment), will be covered by the purchased membership. A classic membership is only valid on claims that have a remaining cost share (after your insurance company has paid their portion).

Does Classic Air Care cover out of pocket costs?

No. The Classic Air Care membership is designed to eliminate out-of-pocket costs for air transportation. Our office will bill your insurance company first and with your help, we will coordinate with the health insurance company to process your claim correctly. Any insured and/or patient cost share (after insurance payment), will be covered by the purchased membership. A classic membership is only valid on claims that have a remaining cost share (after your insurance company has paid their portion). If your insurance company denies the air ambulance claim for any reason, the membership will not cover the denied charges; however, please be aware our office makes every effort to help get any erroneous denied claims overturned.

What is PHI in DOD?

Any protected health information (PHI) in your records may be used and disclosed generally as permitted by the HIPAA Privacy Rule (45 CFR Parts 160 and 164), as implemented within DoD. Permitted uses and disclosures of PHI include, but are not limited to, treatment, payment, and healthcare operations.

What does USG do?

The USG routinely intercepts and monitors communications on this IS for purposes including, but not limited to, penetration testing, COMSEC monitoring, network operations and defense, personnel misconduct (PM), law enforcement (LE), and counterintelligence (CI) investigations.

Can the USG inspect data stored on this IS?

At any time, the USG may inspect and seize data stored on this IS. Communications using, or data stored on, this IS are not private, are subject to routine monitoring, interception, and search, and may be disclosed or used for any USG-authorized purpose.
