Patients often rely on nurse advocates to help them navigate the complexities of the healthcare system. Because of this, patient advocacy is one of the most important roles that a nurse can play in patient care. Nurse advocates can help their patients assert their rights and secure the treatment they need. In this article, we discuss what patient advocacy is, list the types of patient advocacy and provide examples of patient advocacy.
Nurses ensure the safety of their patients while they are receiving treatment at a healthcare facility. When it's time for the patient to be discharged, the nurse communicates with social works or case managers to ensure the patient is also safe at home. If the patient needs assistance after discharge or home healthcare, a nurse advocate may set this up before the patient goes home.
When other providers overlook a patient's needs or potential avenues for treatment while the patient is at a medical facility, a nurse can act as a mediator between the patient and the doctor. For example, when a patient receives unsafe accommodations, an inaccurate diagnosis or unclear self-care instructions, a nurse alerts the medical facility and the patient's doctor, communicates the issue and helps resolve the issue.
When a patient is feeling vulnerable, the nurse gives the patient consideration and attention as they express their concerns or ask questions. For example, the nurse may stay in the patient's room while the doctor is discussing treatment options or a diagnosis. The nurse can help the patient ask questions, find answers and understand medical terminology. Other examples include explaining how the healthcare system works or explaining the patient's right to refuse a test or procedure.
Nurses can inform their patients about social and financial assistance programs before discharging them. Providing these resources before the patient leaves the healthcare facility can help ensure the patient can access affordable prescriptions and supplies, and it helps ensure they have social resources to rely on if they experience difficulty with their self-care.
Choosing new doctors wisely: Nurses can help their patients find trusted health professionals through recommending local doctors or other professionals who can help them find the right physician. They can also explain methods for evaluating a new doctor to make sure they're the right choice for the patient.
By knowing their patient's wishes and any information they've provided in legal documents regarding their care , a nurse can help protect their patient's rights. An example of this is helping the patient communicate their treatment decision to a difficult family member who might upset the patient or disagree with the patient's wishes. Another example is helping the patient express their treatment goals to the doctor, social worker or other medical team members.

Valuables. If you bring any valuables to the hospital and they cannot be sent home, we recommend placing them in the hospital safe during your stay. If you need items secured, let your nurse know or call our Public Safety Department at 773-296-5300.

The hospital has apartments on campus that can be rented for an overnight stay for your loved ones.

Advance Directives are instructions you provide ahead of time concerning the medical treatment you wish to receive, should you lose the ability to make your own decisions. At Advocate Christ Medical Center, we can provide you with written forms that meet the requirements of the State of Illinois, which will assist you in documenting your wishes.
These forms include: Health Care Consent form, HIPPA form, Acknowledgement of Responsibility form, Coordination of Benefits form list ing any other insurance you may have, if any, and if you have Medicare, the Important Message from Medicare document.
During your hospital stay, you will only need a few personal items, such as toiletries, bathrobe, slippers and a nightgown or pajamas. We do provide hospital attire which is often more practical during your first few days. After that, you may prefer to wear your own clothing.
Advocate Christ Medical Center provides free television service in all patient rooms. One television is available in each patient room and is shared by both patients. Television functions are controlled by the remote control unit near your bed. If you require closed captioning, please notify your nurse or any other member of the patient care team.
The chapel is also used for occasions of formal worship and memorials led by the chaplains.
To ensure that patients with impaired sensory, mobility or speaking skills have an equal opportunity to benefit from medical center services, a variety of specialized services are available.
