Respiratory infections increase a person's chance of heart diseases, including heart attack and stroke, by causing inflammation, reduced ability to pump blood, abnormal heart rhythms, and harmful effects on the heart muscle. Cardiac complications in otherwise healthy people following a COVID-19 infection are fairly common, but whether these complications result from a myocardial viral infection or are secondary to systemic inflammation and/or thrombosis is still dubious. By utilizing an engineered heart tissue model of a COVID-19 infection, scientists observed heart damage resulting from a COVID-19 infection is caused by the virus invading and replicating inside of a type of heart muscle cell, called cardiomyocytes, leading to cell death and interfering with heart muscle contraction. They found no evidence of infection in other cell types such as cardiac macrophages, fibroblasts, or endothelial cells, and the heart damage was independent of the general inflammatory response to viral infection elsewhere in the body. This study has been validated in human tissue from four COVID-19 patients.
